"MAKING TEACHERS SPECIALIST”.
It’s a small review about Mr. Anurag’s article “MAKING TEACHERS SPECIALIST”.
In the article written by Mr. Anurag the citation “It is very hard to find any country that by design keeps the subject knowledge bar as low as India” took a minute for me to realize where the Indian education system stands today.
When Mr. Anurag compared the Indian education system to other country’s I was shocked to find the flaws our education system has.
It is the mindset of our Indians to think that imparting education to primary school students is much easier. But, in reality it is the toughest job. The future of the young minds is laid by the teaching imparted in primary level. As per Mr. Anurag’s words if anyone has not started teaching then he has advised to step out and start it right away with class 5 and go on until 8. With this experience one will not only face the challenges but learn the value of the relationship of trust between child and a teacher, the emotional state of a child, the knowledge levels and also about the subject knowledge of a teacher.
When we expect the student to have good knowledge then what about teachers? Teachers should have a better knowledge (deeper and broader). When we look into India’s school education, to become a teacher for grades 1 to 8, D.Ed. is the basic qualification. The entry to a D.Ed. program is after passing grade 12. It is a 2 year program, and it doesn't do anything with the subject!!!!!!!!
I agree with Mr. Anurag’s statement. Is grade 12 level knowledge is enough to teach up to class 8? Can they explain it in a better way?
In olden days many people who had passed grade 10 taught the students but in 21 century this is not the case. To get a better quality of education the teacher should have minimal subject knowledge i.e. an undergraduate level education.
He not only mentioned about the flaws in design of the system he also spoke about reality of Indian education. The percentage of teachers qualifying through TETs has routinely decreased even though they are under graduates. He mentioned 3 points which I felt as important.
- Motivation and engagement of teachers which is often affected negatively by a lack of subject knowledge.
- There are many other capacities that are required to be an effective teacher, not only subject knowledge.
- Among 8 million teachers there are some teachers who have good subject knowledge.
To improve the quality of teachers, appointment of teachers both in private and public schools should be contingent on qualifying through TETs. To get a good undergraduate teacher, the public and private sector who are developing these undergraduates should improve. As most of the private education institutions are commercialized achieving this is quiet difficult. But if tried definitely this scenario can be changed.
· Investments must be increased in effective in-service support for teachers on subject knowledge.
· The design of teacher preparation must be changed. All teachers should go through a 5 year integrated program on subjects and teacher education.
These are few significant points Mr. Anurag pointed in his article. It is all about how to make teachers specialist. What are the important aspects to be undertaken to achieve it.
The article gave me a thought for a moment that if each individual
can think about our education system as Mr. Anurag then definitely a drastic
change can be brought into the Indian education system.
